fabric, foam
20"w x 74"h x 20"d
Inspired by the traditional wedding dress of the Korean Court during the Chosun Era (1200–1900 A.D.), this piece reimagines a storied form using an assemblage of “forbidden” fabrics: Italian brocade, metallic chiffon, sequins, faux leather, and damask silk. An animated foam “pouf,” evoking the elaborate hairstyles of Louis XVI’s court, further amplifies a sense of displacement and discord. The work invites reflection: Is beauty rooted in the time-honored tradition of its form, in the unique character of each fabric, or in the deliberate clash of what is “not allowed”? As you step away, what lingers in your memory? Much like encountering someone who defies conventional categorization, this piece challenges us to remember the unexpected and the enigmatic.
