Mary Magdalene is not depicted as a prostitute in the Bible, yet history has recast her in contrast to the sanctified image of Mary, the Holy Mother—reflecting a societal need to divide women into categories of purity and sin. Similarly, the term onnabugeisha, referring to a female samurai, contains the word geisha, invoking exoticized fantasies of submissive femininity. This piece explores the duality of womanhood—the internal struggle shaped by external expectations—through the form of a proper lady’s garment that is, paradoxically, constructed as an undergarment. It asks: Who decides what is appropriate? And what does it cost to inhabit both power and grace in a body that is always being interpreted?
