Tree

2023

resin sawdust composite boards, MDF

38"w x 50"h x 3"d

Commissioned for the “wood” floor of a residential corridor, this work features the word tree rendered in 48 languages. Each word is laser-cut into MDF and mounted on colorful 4”x4” tiles made from recycled wood composite. The result transforms language into texture—repetition into visual variation. Drawing on Saussure’s theory of the sign, the piece multiplies the signifier while holding the signified—tree—steady. Yet even this constancy shifts, as each word appears on a distinct wood surface, subtly altered by grain, color, and form. In this forest of signs, meaning is not fixed but shaped by material, culture, and context. The work invites reflection on how a single idea can feel different across languages, scripts, and physical forms—reminding us that language is not just a label, but a way of seeing and belonging.
